Dr. Barry Mowell joins LatCham as an individual member. He is Professor of Area Studies and History at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Adjunct Professor of Education at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. He holds three Masters degrees in Geography/History, Comparative Religion, and Public Management, an EdS degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Doctorate in Social Science Education (Higher Education cognate). He has completed post-graduate work in Sociology and is currently undertaking a PhD in International and Comparative Politics.

He is the recipient of several teaching awards including Professor of the Year, Sensormatic Electronics Corporation Endowed Teaching Chair, A. Hugh Adams Endowed Teaching Chair, Classroom Research Award, and most recently was a finalist for the Florida Association of Community Colleges' Florida Professor of the Year award.

Dr. Mowell has authored several articles and authored or edited four books including Teaching About the Islamic World recently published by the National Council for Geographic Education. He is currently working on a new book, Sub-Saharan Africa in the Classroom: Methods and Resources to be published by NCGE in 2009. He has served as Latvia's Honorary Consul to Florida since 2005 and primarily works to promote educational and cultural linkages between Latvia and Florida.
